So I have been working with WordPress now for about 2 weeks and I have to say that it is a very frustrating platform to learn as a beginner. Back in the day I could start with a blank page, an idea in mind and then just start coding it. As things change I find myself needing to adapt to these changes, for me it’s frustrating but when I finally do figure it out, it’s a pretty good feeling. What I have seen is that others like myself who are “technically challenged” when it comes to this, there is very little help for us out there. I have searched out problems and I am finding out that the answers I and others like me are getting are just solutions to problems, not explaining the what, why or how.

I have read a few articles about how some beginner and expert developers have actually given up on using WP because of how complicated it “can” be. I have watched countless videos on youtube about using wordpress, but in the end it seems like those developers want you to build the website they think you need, not the one you need. Don’t get me wrong, the theme that Mike introduced me to is getting easier to understand the more I work with it, but there are some out there that are just to complicated, over the top and some that are just pure garbage.

I find it funny that there are people out there that say, “Oh yea, you can do all of this for free”, but free is turning out to be a little on the pricey side. I don’t mind paying for good services, Mike suggested WPEngine to use for hosting and I have to say that I am very pleased with that recommendation. The tech support is top notch, and the plan I got is perfect for my needs. The one problem that I have is that their website is a bit confusing to navigate, but again, working with it I am finding my way around. The X theme that I bought, it in itself was intimidating at first, but with Mike’s help and me just plugging away at it, it seems to be the one for me. It’s just going to take time for me to learn everything that it can do, basically trial and error. Sure I could have gone with Wix for free but the functionality of it seems to be a bit restricted, this platform offers me a bit more flexibility.

I am going to keep plugging away at it because I refuse to give up. So thanks Mike for putting up with all my private messages and posts in the forums.

I found this quote to be interesting from article I read:

““What WordPress does is make people think they know what they are doing when they don’t. It’s too easy to create something and the power you feel from being able to do things you don’t really understand convinces you you actually know what you’re doing. So you get people with the ability to do things on the web that have no idea if what they are doing is right or wrong. And they start doing very dangerous things. They set up insecure sites. They write terrible code. They get hacked. And then to top it off they start selling their services!”

Here’s the thing you have to appreciate is that you got a full blown CMS with a store up and running in 2 weeks. If you had to hand code this functionality OR pay for it it would be impossible. WordPress is an ongoing always evolving skill, so don’t get frustrated. That quote was probably from some coding nerd that thinks everyone can just code all the things from scratch.

That quote is the kind of thing I keep running into when I search out questions that I have when I am stuck. It seems like there are people out there who really love it and some that really just hate it!

I am finding it easier to use once I understand the components. I have resorted to focusing on one section at at time until I like it and then apply that formula to the next section. I am getting more comfortable with the functions of it, now I just have to think about how I want it to look, layout and content.

Sometimes I’m think, how do I do this, and then I see there is a plugin for what I want to do, just finding out which plugins are good and which ones are a waste of time is the hard part.

So Mike, I found a theme that I want to use, after finding out where they were, lol. I want to use the Integrity 3 theme, but it says demos on all the pages when I bring them up in cornerstone. How can I use that as my site and have all the edit functions available?

    Thanks…

That’s great! If you have any X Theme specific issues you’d like me to tackle in an upcoming show let me know. Glad it worked out

yea, how about a show covering the whole contact form setup and configuration…? That would be awesome, like showing how to set up using Jotform from start to finish. I would definitely check that out…!

    You the man Mike…!

Hey Apache not a bad idea. I have been thinking about that because I helped Nick D get going on it. I should probably hit that up sooner than later!
